Mary Burnett was the First Librarian (1924-1928)

(excerpt from the Zeigler Public Library's Newsletter December 18, 2001 Vol 1 No. 1)

Zeigler, Franklin County, Illinois was a very rapid growing community in the early and mid-years of the 1920's. As more families arrived in the boom town a greater need for services was evident.

One of the identified needs for Zeigler was a need for a library. Most citizens within the community did not own books and those that did had very few. Mrs. Martha Dawson urged the city officials and others to establish a library for the town. However, it took the action of the women for this dream to come true. The first Zeigler library was established, at the urging of Mrs. Dawson, by the Zeigler Women's Club for the benefit of all.

As the years passed, the new library proved to be very popular and well utilized, especially during the "depression years". After a few years, the library was adopted as a city department with their own governing board. Consequently, Mayor C.M. Smith appointed the first of many City of Zeigler Library Boards. The initial board was composed of many prominent citizens, as it is today.

With the passing of time, the library seemed to be pushed from pillar to post, not having a permanent home. Finally, Mr. E.L. Burger, Mine Superintendent, convinced both the coal company and the city that the library must have a facility of its own. The City of Zeigler then took action to construct the Community House and a section of that structure was designated to house the library. On May 27, 1938 the Community House was formally dedicated.

Now, 63 years later, a new beginning is on the horizon.
