The Prudent Family's Service to Zeigler

provided by Tony Prudent

October 2005

Eugene A. Prudent, who was the Mayor of Zeigler more then 16 years. Matter of fact, is was 16 years straight. Then went on to become City Treasurer for many more years. He also started Cory League, which we all refer to it as Little League in the city. There is still that plaque hanging in my Grandmother's house today. He also had the Housing Authority built.

He was the treasurer for both the Eagles Club and the American Legion for many, many years. He helped to have the current Catholic Church built as he served on the Church Advisory Board. The baseball diamond just across from Furlow's is named Eugene A. Prudent field. He worked and Bell and Zoller Coal Company as a accountant for many years. What the most wonderful thing about it, is that he did all on "ONE" leg, with "ONE" crutch.

Tony (grandson) states that he (Eugene) was "One of the most courageous, thoughtful, generous and humble men that I know."

Dr. R. Michael Prudent, M.D.He has not lived in Zeigler in many years, his outstanding educational performance while attending Z-R High were nothing short of remarkable. He graduated top of his class, scored one of the highest ACT/SAT stores Z-R has ever had, went on to college in Kentucky were he graduated (top of his class).......Class President, the President of the Fraternity, was listed as Who Who in America. Was active in Big Brother/Big Sister, the Special Olympics and that list goes on. He went on to medical school @ SIU and graduated as Class President and with top honors. He is now a Psychiatrist in Atlanta, Georgia and lives there with his partner Craig Pigg and there beautiful son, Cooper.

The other person, whom I can not forget is my mother Sharon J. Prudent. Who served as City Clerk for almost 23 years. I can recall visiting her there after school and attending Christmas Party's. I can also recall the many people in town that would call our home for a answer or advice. Or finding out how they could get help with fixing up their home or a food basket @ Christmas. I remember the many toys that were collected and food baskets that were put together and delivered. I remember it all !

My mother gave 23 years as City Clerk.
