Being raised in Zeigler I learned that every little boys dreams ...... can come true...
Raymond was born and raised in Zeigler, and left after graduating high school in 1956. Like many others his age he went to the Chicago area where he worked for a few years before moving to the South Florida region around Fort Lauderdale where he entered into the field of Law Enforcement.
After graduating from the Fort Lauderdale Police Academy, he attended Florida Atlantic University at Boca Raton, and later studied Criminal Law courses at Pompano Beach through the extension of Stetson University School of Law. As a uniformed patrol officer he was instrumental in the life saving incident of a seventy-one-year-old woman, and a separate incident involving a four-year old boy drowning victim. At an awards ceremony held by the City Council the President presented Ray with a special city resolution for “Above and Beyond the Line of Duty,” and told Ray, “Your actions are indicative of the type of Officers we have and the type of Police work we are proud of.” The special resolution was placed into business as a permanent addition to the city’s public records, and a letter of commendation followed.
For his actions of above the line of duty Ray was awarded a bronze wall plaque and a letter of commendation from the Police Chief and the department, and one of the same type from the local Fraternal Order of Police Lodge. More honors followed when Ray was called to the state capitol and was appointed by Governor Rubin Askew as a member of the advisory board to a citizen crime control program. Ray was then recognized at the Fort Lauderdale Sheraton Inn where he was the honored guest of the Greater Fort Lauderdale 100 Club, and his name was placed on their honor roll. It was at this banquet that he learned he had been voted and selected as the #2 “Policeman of the Year” for the entire state of Florida. For his life saving actions Ray was later nominated and accepted by the American Police Hall of Fame and was awarded certificates of honor and chest medals for the “Good Samaritan Award,” the “Life Saving Award,” and the “Outstanding Commendation Award.” Ray finished his career in Law Enforcement with the rank of Chief Supervisor of the Detective Bureau, and returned to his beloved Southern Illinois where he entered into Manufacturing Executive Management, which he later retired from. Today he and his wife Edith live a quiet life in Herrin, Illinois where he writes movie scripts and non-fiction crime books, poetry, and short stories of the actual cases he worked during his career.
