My History Book of Heroes

                             by Raymond D. Null

History is a book of recorded facts, of past events and times,

where most all the national Heroes, are remembered in its lines

But there are so many hometown Heroes, whose deeds are overlooked,

and the names of the deserving Men and Women, are not in any book

Where are the Construction workers listed, who are at work at the break of sun,

and where can we find the Newspaper Editor, who works “til the news is done”

Are all the Factory workers listed somewhere, who stand and work for hours,

and where are the names of the Ameren workers, who provide our gas and power

Where is the name of the Postal worker, who makes sure we get our mail,

and on what page is that friendly Cop’s name, who kept your kid out of jail

Where are the names of the Abate groups, who for America they proudly stand,

and will ride their motorcycles anywhere, to lend a kind, helping hand

Are the names of the people of the Telephone repairs, all clearly written down,

and where’s the name of the brave Fireman, who stands guard in our home town

And what about all the Coal Miners, who risk their lives everyday,

and are the names of all the Truck Drivers listed, who help us survive everyday

Where is the name of our Church Pastor, who sat up and prayed all night,

for that loved one of ours who suffered so much, and held on to his life

Where is the name of that little Boy Scout, who one day showed he cared,

and brought your lost purse right back to you, and all your money was there

On what page is the Good Samaritan’s name, who helps people everyday,

or your car Mechanic, and the Hospice Nurse, and what about the C.N.A.

Where are the names of all the Assistants, who save their boss’s hides,

or the Carpenter, or the Man on the Roof, who keeps your home dry inside

Where are the names of the Plumbers listed, in what book will they be found,

or the Electrician who solved your “lights out” problem from a telephone near downtown

What about our own Mom and Dad, who for years have always been there,

and what about all our Friends and Neighbors, who always showed they cared

On what page is our Insurance Agent listed, whose hours and days are so long,

making sure that our policies are all up to date, during the fires and the storms

And where are all the City Crew’s names, that make sure that our hometowns,

are so beautifully kept in the summertime, and clear when the snows come down

Most real Heroes go unnoticed today, because they make no news,

but they are on their job everyday, and there’s more than just a few

Everyone knows who they are, and know most of them by name,

and my History Book of Heroes is full of Neighborhood names
